Daily life in the USA: grocery shopping

Grocery shopping, that might sound as a very simplistic thing, a daily routine not worth writing about. And yet, in this country, nothing seems to be that simple.

Finding a supermarket is not the problem here, for there seems to be one on every streetcorner. But finding the right (and affordable) ingredients for your daily meals, is much harder.

Don't get me wrong: they have everything (except our delicious Dutch stuff, but let's not complaint too much about that). The problem is that they have too much.

Example: we wanted to eat Tortillas the other night. Simple, fast and definitely something you can easily get in this part of the States. But when we arrived in the 'Mexican aisle', there weren't two or three different tortillas available, like what we were used to. No, they basically stuffed the entire aisle with it.

And that is the problem with American supermarkets: there is just too much to choose from!

Did we have to go for the big ones, the smaller ones, the yellow ones, the 'good for your figure' ones or just the most normal looking ones? The cheap, the expensive or the ones on offer?

From everything there is to eat, tortillas, cheerios, crisps, pasta, pickles, they have at least 20 options to choose from. And that turned out to be quite a challenge for us, the people who have never been in a Walmart before. Eventually, we ended up standing in front of the Tortillas for about 15 minutes. And after making that impossible decision, there was still the sauce to pick, the crisps (do not even start about that aisle) and what to eat for breakfast...

But, not to be writing only negative things about daily life: the huge amount of food in the supermarkets does have great advantages as well! We are working hard to try every flavour of Pringles available ( ever heard of Cheeseburger and Jalapengos flavoured Pringles? ), every box of Cereals on sale and we try new sorts of vegetables everyday! Keeps you busy.
