Every New Year's resolution: The Gym

After all the stuffed Turkey, three course Christmas meals and the fountains of wine, beer and Champagne (I'd wish) that come with these celebrations, it is time to get of the couch, out of the car and into the Gym. When the calendar says 'January' it is time to get rid of that holiday fat, time to find the local Fitness' membership card. Basically, it is every New Year's resolution...

Most of the local gyms here are open 24/7, so if you're ever in need to have a gym session after getting drunk on a Saturday night it is not a problem. Or if you wake up in the middle of the night after dreaming you ate yourself fat (that's not hard here, I can tell you). No excuses, the gym is always open and ready for you to get rid of your guilty conscious. For now, at least, until the next holidays.

My fitness has a heated pool, a day care, a fitness classroom, a spinning room, a large fitness area and the best thing: the cardio-cinema. Here you can work some sweat and at the meantime watch a movie. It feels like you never left that comfy couch and you don't even have to spend hours browsing Netflix for it. They make the choice for you! Which can be good, I can tell you it works best with movies like 'Fast and Furious' and 'Taken', or bad. I mean, have you ever tried to work out when watching a teen rom com? With the right adrenaline-pumped movie your 30 minutes of cardio literally fly by. And if the movie is good, just stay on the treadmill for another hour and watch yourself in shape. Easy!

Out of the darkness however, in the fitness area, there is no hiding from anyone. There are pumped up men AND women, of all ages, all around you. Who are all watching tv, by the way, the screens (even though a lot smaller) are still everywhere. So when I am lazily lifting some 'weights', I see grandma opposite me lifting double (okay, it was triple) seemingly without any effort. Without the occasional steroids injections the fitness area makes you feel like a tiny, weak person. Or not, if you avoid the giant mirrors on the walls.

It's one of the reasons why I prefer to stay in the cardio cinema, where nobody can see me and where I can secretly enjoy Titanic.
